Disqualified From Nigeria’s Olympics Team Due to Her Name, ‘Echikunwoke’ Breaks Record as First American Woman to Win Silver Medal in Hammer Throw

Caught in a web of country blinded by tribalism but filled with the zest to stand tall, a Nigerian, Annette Echikunwoke has broken world record as the first woman to win Olympic silver medals in the woman’s hammer throw for the United States at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics.

The 28-year-old was set to represent Nigeria at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics before switching her allegiance to the US.

According to report, she was set to represent Nigeria in 2020 Olympics but her name Annette Nneka Echikunwoke betrayed her and she was disqualified along tribal lines with nine other athletes.

The Nigerian Athletic Federation has claimed she didn’t meet the requirements and omitted her name.

In 2024, Echikunwoke changed her allegiance to the United States to compete at Paris and became the first woman in America to win an Olympic silver medals in the women’s hammer throw.

Reacting to her win, Echikunwoke said, “I am so glad to be able to have what I experienced here in Paris and to be able to come away with a medal.

“Being with the US, feeling cared for as an athlete, I really performed on top of my game.”
