Inibehe Effiong, prominent human rights advocate and activist, has asked Bola Tinubu to address the demand of the planned protest before August 1 to avoid potential unrest in the country.
He expressed this concern in a recent interview on Arise TV.
Effiong emphasized that the portrayal of the protest as a potential threat to national security is unfounded. “I have not seen any indication from any person or group that they plan to unleash anarchy on the nation,” he stated.
According to Effiong, the perception that Nigerians or foreigners are plotting to incite violence is merely speculative and not based on any credible information.
He highlighted a recent court ruling which supports the right to peaceful assembly, irrespective of fears about potential violence. The court decision explicitly prohibits the police from obstructing protests based solely on anticipated disruptions, reinforcing the legitimacy of peaceful demonstrations.
He called on Tinubu to take proactive measures by addressing the protesters’ demands before the deadline. He warned that failing to engage with the concerns raised by the citizens could lead to an escalation of tensions.
“Tinubu should meet the demands of Nigerians before August 1 to avert protests,” Effiong urged, stressing the importance of dialogue in maintaining public order.
