At least 20 worshippers sustained various degrees of injuries in an early morning attack on a mosque in the Laraba Abasawa area of Gezawa Local Government Area, Kano State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 15, when an unidentified man poured petrol and set fire to the mosque during prayers.
According to eyewitnesses, about 40 worshippers were inside the mosque at the time of the attack.
The suspect reportedly locked the mosque doors after igniting the fire, causing panic and making it difficult for the victims to escape.
It took some time for people outside to become aware of the incident and assist in rescuing those trapped inside.
The eyewitness who craved anonymity, stated, “The man used petrol and lit fire while the people, about 40 of them were praying. He locked the mosque after the fire.
“It took time for people outside to get aware of the incident and rescue the victims who were struggling to break out,” he added.
The injured worshippers have been taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for treatment.
The Kano State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack.
