Nigerian philanthropist and founder of the Coscharis Group,Dr. Cosmas Maduka has criticized the popular Nigerian phrase “Money na water,” saying that flashy displays of wealth are a reflection of a flawed culture.

Speaking in an event on Monday, Dr. Maduka said he has never heard wealthy individuals, including prominent business figures like Tony Elumelu and Femi Otedola, publicly liken money to water.

He emphasized that growing up, rich people were generally discreet about their wealth.

“These people that make noise, they never see money,” he added, noting that genuine wealth encourages humility and restraint.

Dr. Maduka also warned against the societal impact of flaunting wealth, particularly its influence on children. “We have embraced a very deadly bad culture, and we are using it to train our children. Money is not water. Those things should stop,” he stated, urging society to discourage such behavior.

His remarks are seen as a direct critique of the popular phrase “Money na water,” which was popularized by Nigerian socialite Pascal Chibuike, also known as ‘Chief Priest.’
