#EndBadGovernance Protest: Group Asks Nigerian Police to Drop All Charges Against #EndBadGovernance Protesters

The Conscience Foundation for Humanitarian Development and Advancement has strongly condemned the Nigerian police and relevant authorities over the charges brought against #EndBadGovernance protesters.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the foundation called for the immediate dismissal of all charges against the 11 protesters and demanded that their frozen bank accounts be unfrozen without delay.

Signed by its Executive Secretary, Bunmi Oyekanmi, the human rights non-profit described the ongoing legal actions and financial restrictions imposed on the protesters as a “cruel injustice,” urging the government to uphold civil liberties and democratic rights.

“Specifically, we highlight the cruel injustice faced by eleven individuals: Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye (aka Lenin), Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi (aka Yomi), Suleiman Yakubu, Opaluwa Eleojo Simeon, Angel Love Innocent, Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello (aka Murtala), Nuradeen Khamis, Abdulsalam Zubairu, and Akande Daniel. Despite being released on bail last year, they have been subjected to continuous court appearances at the Federal High Court,” the Foundation stated.

The group further accused the Nigeria Police’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of illegally arresting and detaining the individuals, and imposing Post-No-Debit (PND) restrictions on their personal and corporate accounts.

“Furthermore, we wish to bring to your urgent attention the illegal arrest and detention of these individuals, coupled with the Nigeria Police (IRT) section’s imposition of Post-No-Debit (PND) orders on the personal and corporate accounts of some of the arrested #EndBadGovernance protesters,” the statement read.

The Conscience Foundation for Humanitarian Development and Advancement has raised serious concerns over the freezing of bank accounts belonging to #EndBadGovernance protesters, following a court order obtained through an ex-parte motion.

According to the Foundation, in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1219/2024, Justice Emeka Nwite granted the order after Ibrahim Mohammed, counsel to the Inspector-General of Police, alleged that the accounts were linked to terrorism financing, treasonable felonies, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking.

The affected accounts include those of Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi (First Bank), Angel Love Innocent (two FCMB accounts), PA.LIN.HO Global Services Ltd (Access Bank and Fidelity), OMMCSL Cooperative (Abbey Mortgage), Great Communicators Cooperative (AG Homes Mortgage), Michael Adaramoye (GTBank), and one Kuda Microfinance Bank account.

Despite the release of Michael Adaramoye on bail last year, the Foundation noted that his accounts—as well as those of Angel Love Innocent and Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi—remain inaccessible, seriously disrupting their ability to perform basic financial activities. It further highlighted how the freezing of Angel Love Innocent’s cooperative and corporate accounts has adversely affected others whose funds are tied to those accounts.

Calling for immediate action, the Foundation demanded that the accounts be unfrozen to allow the individuals and organisations to resume normal financial operations.

In addition, the Foundation appealed to the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigeria Bar Association, Amnesty International, the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria to intervene and pressure the Attorney General to drop all charges. It also urged the police’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to return all seized properties belonging to the activists.

The Foundation called on media organisations and civil society groups to rally behind efforts to end what it described as targeted repression, and appealed for urgent intervention to relieve those affected by the ongoing legal and financial actions.

Public outcry continues to grow as various groups denounce the treatment of the #EndBadGovernance protesters, describing it as unjust and politically motivated.
