JUST IN: DSS Takes Over Abuja Court Ahead of Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial

DSS

A contingent of heavily armed operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) has been deployed to the Federal High Court in Abuja, ahead of the commencement of the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The proceedings regarding this matter were previously suspended following the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge Kanu in October 2022.

The appellate court further ruled that Kanu’s abduction from Kenya to Nigeria was illegal and unlawful and consequently quashed the terrorism charges levelled against him by the Federal Government.

However, the Nigerian government lodged an appeal against this judgment at the Supreme Court. On December 15, 2023, the apex court rendered its verdict, ordering the resumption of Kanu’s trial on terrorism charges.

It is worth noting that Kanu has been in DSS custody since June 2021, following his extradition from Kenya to Nigeria.
