JUST IN: 6.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Mindanao, Philippines

A magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck the Mindanao region of the Philippines on Friday.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said that the quake occurred at 4.14 p.m. local time and was centered off the coast of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a statement saying that there was no immediate tsunami threat following the earthquake.

However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned that aftershocks and potential damage are to be expected from such a powerful tremor.

The quake was felt in several parts of Mindanao, including Davao City, Cagayan de Oro City, and Zamboanga City. There were no immediate reports of casualties or injuries.
