Ebonyi Launches Free Bus Service Following Fuel Subsidy Removal

In response to the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government, the Ebonyi State government has launched free toll bus services to alleviate the impact on its residents.

The initiative kicked off with four 100-seater buses procured specifically for workers in Ebonyi State. These buses will operate on various routes, including from Abakaliki to the Permanent Site of the State-owned University (EBSU), at Ezzamgbo; from Abakaliki to Ikwo; and from Abakaliki to the Centenary City where the new government house is located.

The free bus service is expected to benefit a wide range of commuters, including students and workers of Ebonyi State University, staff of Centenary City, and students from FUNAI and the College of Education.

The Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Mbam, announced the launch of free transport services in the state as part of Governor Nwifuru’s People’s Charter of Needs manifesto. He praised the governor for being a man of action who delivers on his promises.

He said, “Today, we have gathered to flag off the free transport services in the state to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal in the transport sector. I want to place it on record that these are 100-seater buses. It is a Free…Free… Transport initiative. There is no payment of a dime; it is the responsibility of the government to take care of the maintenance of these buses. All you need to do is keep enjoying it.”

He also revealed that the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Mr. Fred Nwaogbaga, had confirmed that the students and workers of Ebonyi State University would benefit from the transport scheme.

He added, “These luxury buses are designated for different destinations. The staff of Centenary City will also benefit from the free initiative. The students from FUNAI and the College of Education will benefit too.”
