Bola Ahmed Tinubu has informed Nigerians that there are no more free handouts. He emphasized the need for hard work, particularly in the agricultural sector, and urged citizens to be patient with the government.
Tinubu explained that his administration is currently focused on revitalizing and rebuilding the country’s economy, and asked for time to accomplish these goals.
He said this during a visit from the Forum of Former Presiding Officers of the National Assembly, led by former Senate President Ken Nnamani, in Abuja.
“People say we’re hungry; yes, I understand that. We don’t want to keep the people hungry and angry, but we say be patient— we must work hard. There is no free beer parlour anymore. We’ll retool and rebuild Nigeria’s economy,” said President Tinubu.
Tinubu’s remarks come as Nigerians endure economic difficulties stemming from the twin policies of fuel subsidy removal and the floating of the Naira.

On his first day in office, Tinubu removed the petrol subsidy, causing fuel prices to triple.
As of Friday, petrol prices in Abuja ranged from N950 to N1,100 per liter.
Moreover, the policy to unify exchange rate windows, also introduced on his first day, led to a significant depreciation of the Naira, dropping from N600 to over N1,500 against the dollar.
As of Friday, the official exchange rate stood at N1,544 per dollar.
