ECOWAS Observers Call for Prompt Release of Liberia’s Run-Off Results

ECOWAS

The National Elections Commission (NEC) of Liberia has been urged by the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM) to promptly and transparently announce the results of the presidential run-off election that took place on Wednesday.

The EOM, led by Prof. Attahiru Jega, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria, said in a Preliminary Statement on Thursday that this would enhance the stability of the country and build on the achievements of the October 10 general elections.

The run-off election was a contest between the incumbent President Georg Weah and the former Vice President Joseph Boakai, who emerged as the top two candidates out of 20 in the first round of the election, but neither of them secured the required majority of over 50 percent of the votes.

The ECOWAS-EOM also appealed to the candidates, their political alliances, and supporters to uphold the spirit of national unity, peace, and stability, and to respect the commitments they made under the Revised Farmington River Declaration. The EOM further urged all stakeholders to refrain from any acts of incitement that would jeopardize the peace, and called on the security agents to maintain professionalism in their duties for the maintenance of order in the country. #ECOWAS
