Delta State Police Public Relations Officer Bright Edafe has come under fire after a viral video surfaced showing him driving without a seatbelt.
The 17-second clip, first shared on TikTok before being posted to X by Instablog, captured the officer behind the wheel without wearing the mandatory restraint.
Edafe later deleted the video from his social media, but not before it sparked widespread outrage and condemnation online.

Human rights activist Rinu Oduala described the act as unlawful, demanding that Edafe face the full weight of the law.

“This is a massive offence in the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This man must be arrested, paraded and made an example of for other law-abiding citizens with immediate effect,” she wrote.
Another user, @lolumide, recalled that in January 2023, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was fined for a similar offence, insisting that Edafe should also be penalised.
“In January 2023, the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was fined by Lancashire Police for not wearing his seat belt while filming a video in the back of a moving car. We need your office to pay is penalty regardless of status,” he posted.
Many Nigerians accused the police of operating double standards, noting that ordinary citizens are often harassed and paraded for minor offences, while senior officers evade accountability.

“The law only works with the common man in Nigeria,” wrote @slimudoh.
@Splendsta challenged Edafe to own up to his actions, writing, “If you have any atom of dignity in you, I challenge you to submit yourself for investigation. You broke the law and should face the consequences.”
Other commentators noted the irony of a police spokesman often seen parading suspects, now caught breaking the law himself.
“Imagine, coming from someone who parades suspects on videos every day. However, I can tell you for free that this particular law doesn’t apply to him. Considering the kind of police we have, nothing will happen to him,” said @mayorlistik.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Police Force had not issued an official response to the growing backlash.
