The Edo State House of Assembly has approved the death sentence for kidnapping after passing the State Kidnapping Prohibition Law 2025 on Tuesday.
Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian initially moved the motion for the house to resolve into the committee of the whole to review the bill clause by clause. The motion was seconded by Minority Leader Henry Okaka, who represents Owan East.

During the clause-by-clause review, the lawmakers amended the existing 2013 law, which had previously prescribed life imprisonment and the confiscation of properties allegedly used for kidnapping.
However, the amendment now enforces a stricter penalty of the death sentence, along with the confiscation of properties used in the crime.
