Edo State Governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, were seen kneeling before Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a visit to Aso Rock on Thursday to express their gratitude for his support during their campaign.
The visit occurred just days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the Edo governorship election.
He secured 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 247,274 votes, and Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, who finished third with 22,761 votes.
Accompanied by senior APC members, Okpebholo and Idahosa thanked Tinubu for the confidence he and the party placed in them. Okpebholo promised to meet the expectations of Edo people by focusing on development and delivering on his campaign promises.
Tinubu congratulated the governor-elect and urged the new leadership to prioritise unity, development, and good governance for the people of Edo State.
The video of Okpebholo and Idahosa kneeling has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some commending the act as humility, while others questioned its significance in the political sphere.
Okpebholo will succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki when his term concludes in November 2024.
