I’ve Experienced Miscarriages, I’m Not Barren—Edo Governor Obaseki’s Wife Replies Oshiomhole

The First Lady of Edo State, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, has responded to former governor Adams Oshiomhole, who had called her ‘childless.’

Oshiomhole, now a serving senator, made the comment during an interview with journalists, which caused widespread outrage.

In a Zoom meeting with Edo women in the diaspora, Mrs. Obaseki emphasized that everyone is created by God with a purpose.

Addressing over 200 women from various countries who joined the virtual meeting, Mrs. Obaseki said, “I dare to call you fruitful. You and I are potential and proud mothers of children who will come in God’s time. Enjoy the life God has given you.”

“My words of comfort to you, like myself, who have conceived and experienced miscarriages, painful stillbirths, and evacuations of babies who died in our wombs is that everyone was created by God for a purpose.

“And as a result, have no children to show for the pain we have endured; you are not barren.

“Take your mind off your challenge, and before you know it, children will start coming.”

She expressed that her contributions to society have extended beyond the biological aspect of motherhood.

Mrs. Obaseki emphasized that being fruitful is not just about childbearing but also about making a positive impact and bringing about meaningful change in society.

“There is no need to feel disheartened. Women can fulfill God’s purpose in many ways beyond motherhood,” she added.

She also offered words of encouragement to women who, like herself, have experienced miscarriages and stillbirths, urging them not to be discouraged or defined by their losses.
