Members of the Edo State Public Works Volunteers have demolished a section of the residence belonging to the former deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.
The demolition, which took place in GRA Benin-city, targeted the security post situated in front of Shaibu’s house.
This development comes in the wake of Shaibu’s impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly, which occurred a week prior. The impeachment was allegedly based on accusations of leaking official secrets and perjury.
Shaibu vehemently opposed his impeachment, asserting that he was being persecuted for exercising his fundamental human rights, particularly in his aspiration to succeed his former boss.
The security post, which served as a temporary shelter for Shaibu’s security details, was located adjacent to the golf course and was a pivotal point for the safety protocols before and after official duties.
Responding to the demolition, a senior member of one of the agencies involved in the exercise, speaking anonymously, stated that the security post was removed since the former deputy governor is now a private citizen and had lost such privilege.
However, the state Commissioner for Roads and Bridges, Eta Uzamere, denied any involvement of his ministry in the demolition, refuting online reports linking his ministry to the exercise.
He said, “I have seen some online reports linking my ministry to the demolition of the former deputy governor’s security and I can tell you it had nothing to do with my ministry.”

An aide to Shaibu expressed dismay over the demolition, emphasizing that the security outpost was not constructed by the government but by Shaibu himself.
The aide criticized the state government’s actions stating, “As I am talking to you, they have destroyed Shaibu’s security outpost. The place was not built by the government, it was built by Shaibu himself. You can see how wicked the state government is.”
