Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, has cautioned that Nigeria will face significant repercussions if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) mishandles the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial election.
Similarly, former President Goodluck Jonathan made an appeal on Friday, urging INEC and security agencies to maintain professionalism and neutrality in carrying out their duties.
He emphasized the importance of the electoral body acting as an impartial umpire to build trust among all stakeholders through a transparent voting process.
In a post on his X account on Saturday, Odinkalu highlighted Edo State’s strategic location, noting that almost every journey across Nigeria passes through the state. ‘
He stressed that any mismanagement of the election by INEC could have nationwide consequences.
Odinkalu said : “If Mahmood Yakubu & @inecnigeria mess with #EdoDecides2024 like they habitually do in deliberate manner, all of #Nigeria will suffer it: there is hardly anywhere u can go to in Nigeria without passing through Edo…. Not that the electoral bandit in charge of #INEC much cares.”
