CAF WCL: Edo Queens Thrashes Ethiopia Side (CBE) 3-0, Top Group B

Debutantes, Edo Queens on Sunday evening thrashed hapless Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) Ladies 3-0 in their opening match of the 4th CAF Women’s Champions League tie played at Laarbi Zaouli stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.

The West African Football Union (WAFU-B) champions got down to busy early in the match as hotshot, Peace Emem Essien scored in the 5th minute but efforts to score more goals despite outplaying their Ethiopian counterparts proved unsuccessful until the end of first half.

However, Edo Queens coach Moses Aduku made some tactical changes in the second half which made the team to play better and scored more goals with Florence Folashade Ijamilusi scoring for her side in the 54th minute before substitute Chukwuamaka Osigwe scored from close range in the 80th minute.

What would have been the fourth goal for Edo Queens scored by Mary Magadalane Anjor late in the match was cancelled after Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened to chalk off the goal after the center referee had given it as a good goal, although the whole ball did not cross the line after hitting the crossbar and bounced on the white line before goalkeeper caught it.

Elsewhere, Samar Niyonkuru’s 45+4′ penalty goal was all the Egyptian club, FC Masar needed to best defend champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies of South Africa 1-0 in the early match of Sunday to cause the first upset of the competition.

The results of the two matches showed that Edo Queens lead the group on superior goals difference with FC Masar placed second but with same three points while Mamelodi Sundowns and CBE are placed third and fourth places respectively.
