The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, over allegations of misappropriation of N80.2 billion.
Bello presented himself at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday morning, accompanied by his lawyers, following months of shunning repeated invitations by the Commission.
Confirming the detention, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, told journalists that Bello was taken into custody by the Commission’s Chief Security Officer.
“It is true that we have him in our custody. The operatives of the Commission arrested him,” Oyewale stated.
The former governor was declared wanted by the EFCC on April 18, 2024, in connection with a money laundering case. However, his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, who previously accompanied Bello to the EFCC office on another occasion, was not part of Tuesday’s entourage.
