EFCC Launches Investigation into Emefiele’s Alleged $15 Billion Foreign Debts

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a thorough investigation into the alleged financial misdeeds of Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

EFCC agents are reportedly investigating Emefiele for a possible $15 billion in foreign debts. The N74.84 billion spent on the Naira’s redesign, manufacture, and introduction is also covered by the study.

After Emefiele was released from the Department of State’s (DSS) detention on Thursday, the investigation started. Because the accusations are pecuniary in nature and go beyond the purview of the security agency, the DSS moved Emefiele to the EFCC.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), issued Bola Ahmed Tinubu an advisory that served as the basis for the decision to transfer Emefiele. According to the advice, based on the evidence thus far, only the EFCC has the authority to look into the matter and possibly prosecute Emefiele.

Emefiele is being looked into for any anomalies in the Anchor Borrowers Scheme and for potential foreign debts. The audit of CBN accounts is also being looked at.

Tinubu has received an interim report on CBN activities from Jim Obazee, the Special Investigator on CBN Activities, who is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the Nigeria Police. The conclusions in this report necessitate further research.

A group of EFCC agents are currently questioning Emefiele regarding these claims.
