EFCC Officer Killed, Another Injured in Armed Attack by Yahoo Boys in Anambra

An officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was shot dead, and another critically injured, after suspected internet fraudsters, commonly known as Yahoo Boys, opened fire on a team of anti-graft operatives in Anambra State on Friday.

The operatives, who had traveled from their zonal headquarters in Enugu for the operation, were ambushed while attempting to apprehend a group of suspected fraudsters.

The deceased officer, an assistant superintendent who recently completed a promotional examination, was killed instantly, while his colleague remains hospitalised in critical condition as of Friday night.

A male suspect has been arrested in connection with the attack, although his identity has not been disclosed. It remains unclear whether he has sought legal representation.

EFCC officials expressed concerns over the incident, citing long-standing issues with the agency’s personnel insurance.

He stated “We no longer have life insurance,” an officer said under anonymity to discuss internal administrative policies. “The last time family members of an officer who died on duty were compensated was under Farida Waziri.”

“So the families of the officer that died today won’t be getting anything,” another officer added. “So can we say he died for nothing?”

The Anambra State Police Command and the EFCC are yet to provide official statements on the incident.
