Inibehe Effiong, a public interest and human rights lawyer, has sharply criticized the recent increase in electricity tariffs, labeling it as “insane.”
Effiong, expressing his views on his official X handle, pointed fingers at Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing him of lacking empathy towards the citizens’ plight.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently approved a significant tariff hike of N225 per Kilowatt for customers categorized under Band A within urban areas. This decision has sparked widespread discontent among the populace.
Effiong, in his post, asserted that such a drastic tariff increase could only occur under the leadership of a president who is disconnected from the suffering of the citizens.
He stated, “The two main fears that I had about a Tinubu presidency were:
“Unprecedented State capture and lack of empathy;

“The insane increment in electricity tariffs can only happen under a President who is divorced from the suffering of the citizens.
“Tinubu’s lack of empathy is gross and appalling,” he stressed.
