You are Issuing Empty Threats Against Imaginary Foes of Tinubu—Inibehe Effiong Mocks Ribadu, Advises Him to Fix Insecurity First

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has lashed out at National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu for what he described as political grandstanding in the face of deepening national insecurity.

Effiong’s comments came in response to a headline by Vanguard newspaper on Tuesday, which read, “Ribadu warns opposition against underrating Tinubu.”

Reacting via his verified X account, Effiong criticized Ribadu for abandoning the country’s pressing security challenges to chase after perceived enemies of the Tinubu government. “Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has not been able to tackle the growing insecurity in the country, but he has the time to be issuing baseless and empty threats against imaginary political foes of the President,” Effiong wrote.

The Lagos-based lawyer described the Tinubu-led regime as one that thrives in politicking but fails miserably in governance. “It is a shame that this regime is excellent in politics and terrible in governance,” he added.

He further decried the politicization of the office of the National Security Adviser, stating that Ribadu’s conduct falls far below the standards expected in a country facing widespread violence and instability. “The National Security Adviser of a serious country ought to be insulated from partisan politics, but here we are. Shameless people,” Effiong stated.

His remarks triggered a flood of critical responses online. Many echoed his concern over what they described as Ribadu’s transformation into a political attack dog rather than a serious national security strategist. A user, @nze_Anambra, wrote, “This is the first time Nigeria is having an NSA who is more political than professional. He combined his job with that of a chief praise singer to Tinubu.”

Another, @cephas_ezekiel, noted, “It’s so pathetic that these men in charge of security rather prefer using the security agencies to attack and fight oppositions rather than using them for their purpose of safeguarding lives and properties.”

Others drew comparisons to past APC administrations. @UcheOke77657070 wrote: “This recklessness and abuse of office by APC didn’t start today. When Buhari ‘won’ his second term, the Chief of Army Staff then, Buratai, and other service chiefs attended many political meetings of the APC.”
