Elon Musk Launches New Political Party to Tackle Trump

Elon Musk, a former ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, announced Saturday that he has launched a new political party aimed at challenging what he calls America’s “one-party system.”

The tech billionaire—once Trump’s top donor in the 2024 election and head of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency—parted ways with the president following a sharp dispute over federal budget cuts and job reductions he spearheaded.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” the SpaceX and Tesla boss posted on X, the social media platform that he owns.

“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Musk referenced a poll he posted on X on Friday, U.S. Independence Day, asking users whether they “want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system” that has shaped American politics for nearly 200 years.

The yes-or-no poll drew over 1.2 million responses.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” he posted on Saturday.

The Trump-Musk feud flared up again late last month when Trump urged Republicans in Congress to fast-track his sweeping domestic agenda, packaged under the name “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

Musk fiercely opposed the legislation, slamming its Republican supporters for promoting what he called “debt slavery.”

He swiftly pledged to form a new political party to take on lawmakers who ran on promises of fiscal restraint but voted in favor of a bill that experts estimate will add $3.4 trillion to the U.S. deficit over the next decade.

After Musk’s sharp criticism of the bill — which ultimately passed and was signed into law — Trump retaliated by threatening to deport the billionaire and cut off federal funding to his companies.

Asked whether he was seriously considering deportation, Trump told reporters, “We’ll have to take a look.” Musk, originally from South Africa, became a U.S. citizen in 2002.
