Former Nigerian Communications Minister Adebayo Shittu has described the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest, scheduled from August 1 to 10, as a treasonous act, punishable by death.
Shittu claims that the protest, aimed at addressing economic hardships and calling for regime change, inherently seeks to remove the current government, which he argues is a treasonable offense.
During an interview with News Central, Shittu maintained his stance despite pushback from the interviewers. He criticized attempts to restrict his interpretation of the protest’s nature, asserting that his views should not be limited by others’ perspectives.
Shittu stated, “You want to protest, want to end bad governance. That mischievously implies that you want to remove the government, which in itself is a treasonable act.”
However, when anchors of the interview cautioned Shittu against labelling a protest treason as improper, the former minister insisted on his statement.
“Your restricting interpretation should not be imposed on all Nigerians, Mr Shittu told his interviewers.
The #EndBadGovernance protests are being organized in response to rising food prices and worsening economic conditions under Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Demonstrations have already begun, with protests reported in Suleja addressing the ongoing economic crisis.
