“I’m Expecting More Defections”—Tinubu Boasts as 2027 Race Heats Up

Tinubu on Thursday expressed confidence that more politicians would cross over to the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, dismissing concerns over growing dissent within the opposition.

At the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit held at the State House Conference Centre, Tinubu told party leaders, lawmakers, and governors that defection is part of the political terrain, stating, “You don’t expect people to remain in a sinking ship without a life jacket.”

The meeting ended with the APC leadership, including the National Working Committee, the Progressive Governors’ Forum, and heads of the National Assembly, unanimously endorsing Tinubu for a second term.

While celebrating the party’s achievements since 2023, Tinubu reiterated that economic reforms under his administration were yielding results, despite being unpopular among the masses. “Today, I am proud to affirm that our economic reforms are working,” he said. “Nothing good comes easy in life. We couldn’t just afford to spend the future of our children and unborn babies.”

He claimed the government’s removal of foreign exchange arbitrage and implementation of tax reforms were attracting foreign direct investment, which he promised would translate into job creation and a better standard of living. “Yes, we encountered challenges when we assumed office in May 2023,” Tinubu said, “but we have made progress by implementing difficult, long overdue but necessary economic reforms.”

The Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, led the charge to back Tinubu’s reelection bid, describing his leadership as visionary. His motion was seconded by the Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas also threw their weight behind Tinubu, echoing praises for his style of governance.

Adding to the chorus, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje declared Tinubu the party’s sole candidate for 2027, while warning against internal sabotage. “I urge all members to reject internal sabotage. Engage communities, listen to citizens, and build a political structure beyond elections,” Ganduje said.

The summit, convened to review the government’s performance over the last two years, highlighted reforms in infrastructure, health, security, and governance.

Despite rising inflation, currency devaluation, and biting hardship, Tinubu insisted his government was on the right track: “We are just halfway through the journey that started 24 months ago.”
