FAAN Denies Involvement in Drug Trafficking Attempt at Lagos Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has distanced itself from a man who was caught trying to smuggle a parcel containing drugs into a passenger’s bag at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The incident, which was captured in a viral video, showed a passenger slapping and forcing a man to kneel down after he discovered that the man had slipped a drug-laden package into his bag while he was about to board a flight to Accra, Ghana.

The passenger, who claimed he was being framed for drug trafficking, raised an alarm and alerted the security personnel at the airport.

The man, who was later identified as an employee of an aviation services company operating within the airport premises, was arrested and taken away for interrogation by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, said the man was not a staff of FAAN and had no authority to handle passengers’ luggage.

She said FAAN was committed to ensuring a drug-free society and had zero tolerance for drug peddling through the nation’s airports.

She also advised passengers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity or person to the appropriate authorities.
