Chaos erupted at Silver Bird International School in Port Harcourt‘s Agip area on Monday as a group of siblings reportedly attacked a teacher and locked up an administrative officer over allegations of inappropriate punishment.

The incident involved a Junior Secondary School student named Favour, whose family members allegedly accosted a female teacher, Sonia Amadi, on her way to school. They purportedly assaulted her for disciplining their child.

Additionally, they barged into the school premises and confined the Admin Officer, Joy Ajayi, inside her office, threatening to subject her to the same treatment.

Ajayi recounted the ordeal, stating, “One of the boys carried the scissors we used in doing school work and threatened to stab me. He asked why should they flog his brother in this school.”

Despite attempts by other parents to intervene, the family persisted in their aggressive behavior towards the school staff.

Ajayi further explained, “They were saying they would flog me and that we should go and call the Police or lawyer. I now said I have a right to defend myself.”

Prior to locking up the administrative officer, the group allegedly assaulted another teacher, Sonia Amadi. Ajayi described the severity of the attack, stating, “Before they came to my office and locked me up, a teacher was flogged, my English teacher Sonia Amadi when she was coming to school.”

Following the incident, the school management filed a formal complaint at the Ada George Police Division. The assaulted teacher was issued a medical form for treatment.

While the police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that she was yet to receive a report on the incident, a rights group, the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, condemned the assault.

The National Coordinator of the group, Price Wiro, emphasized the importance of following proper channels for redress. “Resort to self-help by taking the laws into your hands is not the way to go,” Wiro asserted.

Wiro called for a thorough investigation into the matter, urging the police to ensure that anyone found culpable faces the law.
