Family Threatens to Expose Politicians Behind Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention

The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has issued a stern warning, threatening to reveal the names of politicians allegedly responsible for their son’s prolonged incarceration.

They condemned his continued detention as not just a personal humiliation but an affront to the entire Igbo community.

Emmanuel Kanu, speaking on behalf of the family, asserted that their son’s ongoing imprisonment, despite numerous appeals and court orders for his release, is a result of the machinations of certain self-serving politicians benefiting from the insecurity in the South East region.

The family vowed to expose these politicians, holding them accountable before the Igbo nation and Biafrans at large should any harm befall Kanu. Emmanuel stressed the inevitability of revealing those behind his brother’s ordeal, asserting that their grip on power is not eternal.

Expressing disappointment with Igbo political elites, the family questioned why they hadn’t engaged Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, nearly a year into his presidency, to discuss Kanu’s release. They criticized the leaders for allegedly neglecting Kanu’s plight while advocating for other issues.

Highlighting he’s deteriorating health and harsh conditions in detention, the family questioned why he’s kept in the Department of State Services (DSS) custody instead of a correctional facility where he could access proper medical care.

The family lamented the denial of bail by Justice Binta Nyako, viewing it as a further humiliation to the Igbo race. They questioned whether the trial judge had thoroughly considered the Supreme Court ruling, which stated that Kanu’s bail revocation was unjustified.

Emmanuel emphasized his brother’s willingness to stand trial but criticized the conditions that he contends do not ensure justice.

“Why can’t they allow him to change his clothes? Why will they keep him in DSS custody for years instead of sending him to Kuje Correctional Centre where he can have access to his doctors?” Emmanuel queried.

The family urged the court to dispel any notion of bias in Kanu’s case and ensure fair treatment.
