Popular human rights activist and legal practitioner, Dele Farotimi, appeared in court on Monday in handcuffs, escorted by police officers.
The hearing took place at a high court in Ekiti State, following his arrest last week at his Lagos residence by officers of the Ekiti State Police Command. Farotimi’s arrest stemmed from a defamation lawsuit filed by Chief Afe Babalola, a highly respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and one of the nation’s most prominent legal minds.
The 95-year-old legal icon accused Farotimi of tarnishing his reputation through statements made in a book titled Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System. Babalola alleged that the book contained unfair and damaging claims about him.
During the court proceedings, Farotimi was granted bail under stringent conditions. He must post ₦50 million and secure a surety who can provide an equivalent sum. The surety is also required to own a landed property as part of the bail terms.
