The FBI has arrested Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade on charges of allegedly orchestrating a racist attack on himself in an attempt to influence the election.
The latest development has led the FBI to refer Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade for prosecution over false statements related to a hate crime hoax, which was allegedly staged to boost his candidacy, according to The Daily Wire.
On November 12, the acting U.S. attorney for the District of Colorado revealed that three of Mobolade’s supporters had been charged with writing the n-word on one of his campaign signs and setting a burning cross in front of it.
The individuals charged were Derrick Bernard Jr., Ashley Blackcloud, and Deanna West.
These supporters allegedly filmed the incident and sent videos to the media in an effort to increase Black voter turnout for Mobolade, an African immigrant.
The actions were reportedly intended to rally support for Mobolade during his mayoral runoff election against Wayne Williams.
Mobolade, a left-wing candidate, ultimately defeated a white Republican in a closely contested election in the conservative city.
According to The Daily Wire, FBI investigators discovered communications showing that Mobolade had been in frequent contact with Bernard, the lead suspect, before, during, and after the incident.

Mobolade was interviewed twice to assess his knowledge of the hoax but strongly denied having any contact with Bernard.
As a result of his conduct during the interviews, the FBI referred Mobolade to the Department of Justice for charges related to making false statements to federal investigators.
FBI officials also claimed that there were dozens of exchanged messages between Mobolade and Bernard.
Bernard, a career criminal, had been sentenced to 32 months in prison in 2018. He allegedly tried to kill two police officers and was later convicted of an unrelated murder of a rapper who had disrespected him.
During the interviews, officials observed that Mobolade scrolled through his phone for memory aid, but they pointed out that “he was literally skipping over text messages,” seemingly unaware that the FBI had already obtained them from other sources.
An official reportedly said, “The initial response from the Department of Justice was, ‘We can’t indict the first Black mayor of Colorado Springs.’ In my experience, if anyone else had been in that position, they would have been charged with lying to a federal agent.”
The alleged hate crime took place in 2023, between the April 4 general election and the May runoff election, which was prompted by the narrow margin in the general election.
