In a significant development for Nigerian sports, the Federal Government has at last fulfilled its financial commitments to the Super Eagles and other national teams, clearing an outstanding payment of N12 billion.
This much-needed injection of funds covers a backlog of payments, including salaries for senior national team coaches spanning 15 months, allowances, and promises owed to both male and female national teams, as well as the Under-20 national team.
The delayed payment had been a longstanding issue, with the Super Eagles previously expressing their frustration over unpaid dues. In 2020, the team revealed that the N1.5 billion approved for their participation in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations had not been released by the government. This shortfall forced the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to divert funds allocated for other teams to ensure the Super Eagles’ participation in the prestigious tournament.
Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, in a press conference in Abuja in January 2022, highlighted the players’ concerns about overdue bonuses for two games. Musa stated, “Regarding the bonus, I think they are just owing us for two games now. Yeah, two games. There is no other outstanding outside these two games.” He emphasized that the players would engage with the coach and NFF officials to address the issue.
With the Africa Cup of Nations approaching, this timely settlement provides much-needed relief for the Super Eagles, underscoring the importance of meeting financial obligations to sustain the country’s sporting prowess on the international stage.
