The Federal Government has urged states across the federation to allocate land for the construction of houses for vulnerable Nigerians. This call was made by Mahmuda Mamman, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, during the 12th meeting of the National Council on Housing and Urban Development in Kaduna.
The theme for the meeting is “Harnessing Local and International Credit Schemes as a Panacea for Affordable Housing Infrastructure Development Under the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
The National Housing Scheme Programme, spearheaded by the ministry, aims to provide affordable housing for the country’s vulnerable population, thereby addressing the housing sector’s deficit. The initiative is part of the government’s commitment to making housing realistic and affordable for all Nigerians, aligning with Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.

The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development plans to implement a social housing scheme to provide decent and affordable houses to meet Nigerians’ housing needs. Mamman stated that the ongoing discussions at the Kaduna meeting would explore how state governments could participate in the housing scheme.
The ministry has written to various state governments, requesting unencumbered lands for the construction of these affordable houses. Mamman emphasized that housing is a right, not a privilege, and this belief underpins the administration’s unique approach.
In addition, the National Population Commission is currently conducting a survey of the Land to determine the nation’s exact housing deficit. The results will be disclosed upon the survey’s completion.
