Five Killed as Sit-at-Home Enforcers Attack Anambra Communities

Communities in the Anambra Central Senatorial Zone are gripped by tension following a series of attacks on Monday morning by gunmen reportedly enforcing the outlawed sit-at-home directive.

According to Daily Post, the incidents, which occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. in Abatete, Abagana, and Ukpo, claimed the lives of at least five individuals.

A source revealed that most of the victims were members of the Anambra Vigilante Services. The first attack took place in Abatete, where gunmen targeted vigilante personnel assigned to the town’s President-General (PG).

Three security operatives were fatally shot, while the PG sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Separate attacks were reported in Abagana and Ukpo. At Ukpo roundabout in Dunukofia Local Government Area, a vigilante member and a motorcycle rider were killed.

The violence has left residents across Anambra Central panicked. A circulating voice note on social media warned Awka residents to remain indoors, given the proximity of the targeted areas to the state capital.

A member of the Abatete community expressed concern, saying: “We are praying for the recovery of our PG. This senseless violence has left our community shaken.”

Similarly, a Ukpo resident shared on Facebook: “It was chaos. The attackers came out of nowhere, shooting indiscriminately and shouting, ‘No Biafra, no freedom.’ We’re still trying to process what happened.”

When contacted, the state police spokesperson, SP, stated: “Details are still sketchy, but our operatives are on the scene. I’ll provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.”
