The Flawed ThisDay 2024 Awards: A Misguided Recognition

The recent ThisDay 2024 Awards have left many scratching their heads, wondering how some of the recipients were chosen.

The inclusion of President Bola Tinubu and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as awardees is particularly puzzling, and raises questions about the criteria used to select them.

Firstly, the recognition of President Tinubu is jarring, given his administration’s underwhelming performance. Many Nigerians had high hopes for his presidency, but so far, his tenure has been marked by unfulfilled promises and a lack of tangible progress.

It is baffling that he would be honoured with an award, especially when many citizens are still waiting to see the impact of his policies.

Just last month, several Nigerians died in a stampede that would have been afforded but due to failure of the government, we are where we are today still wallowing in starvation and hunger – the worst in Nigeria’s history.

Furthermore, the inclusion of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is also problematic. While she is undoubtedly a highly accomplished individual, her decision to relinquish her Nigerian citizenship raises questions about her commitment to the country.

It is ironic that she would be recognised by a Nigerian organisation, when she has seemingly turned her back on her homeland. The ThisDay 2024 Awards are meant to celebrate outstanding achievements and contributions to Nigerian society.

However, the selection of President Tinubu and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala undermines the integrity of the awards. It appears that the organizers have prioritised prestige and reputation over actual accomplishment and dedication to Nigeria.

The flaws in this year’s awards are a missed opportunity to truly recognise and celebrate the unsung heroes and dedicated individuals who are making a positive impact in Nigeria.

Instead, the focus has been placed on high-profile figures who do not necessarily embody the values and principles that the awards are meant to uphold. In the future, the organisers of the ThisDay Awards must be more mindful of their selection process, ensuring that recipients are chosen based on their genuine contributions to Nigerian society, rather than their fame or prestige.

Only then can the awards truly serve as a meaningful recognition of excellence and dedication to public service.#ThisDay
