Focus on State Police, UK Urges Nigeria

The British Government has urged Nigeria to prioritize the establishment of state police and enhance the representation of women in politics and parliament as the National Assembly reviews the 1999 Constitution.

During a visit to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard-Hugh Montgomery emphasized the need for Nigeria to address these critical issues. He also highlighted the importance of palliatives and social safety nets alongside economic reforms.

Montgomery stated, “We are watching your debate about issues like State police, issues like promoting better representation for women in politics and in parliament, issues like the palliatives and social safety nets that need to go alongside the difficult economic reforms.”

Acknowledging the strong ties between Nigeria and the UK, Montgomery underscored the significance of diplomatic engagement to understand Nigeria’s challenges and priorities. He emphasized the importance of democratic institutions and the ongoing constitutional review debates.

In response, Senator Akpabio expressed appreciation for the British envoy’s contributions to democratic governance in Nigeria, stating, “We value your input to democratic practice not just in Nigeria but in Africa.”

Akpabio highlighted the robust legislative agenda of the 10th National Assembly, emphasizing its focus on people-centered policies. He also emphasized the importance of women’s inclusivity in governance and announced plans to amend the electoral act for greater transparency and credibility in elections.

He remarked, “Nigeria is still in a learning curve as far as the practice of democracy is concerned.”
