Former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant Resigns from Parliament

Former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant announced his resignation from parliament on Wednesday, citing the need to reassess his direction in public service.

Gallant, who has frequently opposed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right government allies, was dismissed from the government in November after ongoing disagreements over the handling of the conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Despite his removal, Gallant retained his seat in the Knesset.

“Just as it is on the battlefield, so it is in public service. There are moments in which one must stop, assess, and choose a direction in order to achieve the goals,” Gallant stated in a televised address.

Gallant had often clashed with Netanyahu and his coalition partners over key issues, including military conscription exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jewish men.

In March 2023, Gallant was dismissed after calling for a pause on a controversial government plan to reduce the Supreme Court’s authority.

The dismissal led to widespread protests, prompting Netanyahu to reverse his decision.

Both Gallant and Netanyahu, along with a Hamas leader, are subjects of International Criminal Court arrest warrants for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza conflict. Israel has contested these allegations.#Israel
