Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has called on Nigerians to direct their reactions to lawmakers who rejected the real-time electronic transmission of election results, rather than blaming Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and others.
The proposal for real-time electronic upload of election results was rejected on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, by the Senate during consideration of the Electoral Act Amendment.
After hours of meetings, executive sessions, and deliberations, the Senate approved sweeping changes to electoral timelines, sanctions for electoral offences, voter accreditation, and post-election dispute resolution.
The amendment passed by the Senate, after being streamlined with the version earlier passed by the House of Representatives and assented to by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will replace the Electoral Act 2022 under which the 2023 elections were conducted.

The passage of the bill by the Senate was followed by controversies, at the heart of which is Clause 60 of the bill dealing with the transmission of election results.
The development has sparked nationwide debate, with critics and opposition figures warning that it may provoke greater apathy towards elections in Nigeria.
However, reacting to the development in a post made on X on Thursday, Sani said citizens should engage directly with senators representing their constituencies if they are displeased or pleased with the decision.

“The lawmakers have rejected the realtime electronic transmission of results. If you like what they did or you don’t like what they did, you should be courageous enough to go to the social media handle of the lawmaker representing your constituency and express your happiness or bitterness,” he said.
He cautioned Nigerians against focusing criticism on Tinubu or the Senate leadership, noting that each senator should be held individually responsible for their legislative actions.
