In a sad development, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has officially announced the demise of Dr Thomas Maurice Asuquo John, a former Group Managing Director (GMD) and Acting Alternate Chairman of the Board of the now-defunct Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Dr John passed away at the age of 84.
A revered figure in the oil and gas industry, Dr. John served as the 5th GMD of NNPC, succeeding the late Dr Aret Adams from April 1990 to June 1992. His contributions were characterised by a deep commitment to the sector’s growth and development.
Dr. John’s illustrious career extended beyond the company, as he held key positions in various organisations.

He served as a Non-Executive Director at South Atlantic Petroleum (SAPETRO), held the position of Executive Chairman at Hydropec Engineering Services Ltd., and was a former Non-Executive Director at United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc., amongst other notable roles.
Expressing condolences on behalf of NNPC Ltd. Management and Staff, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mr Mele Kyari, conveyed the company’s heartfelt sympathies to Dr. John’s wife, family, friends, and relatives during this challenging period.
