Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s aide, Laolu Akande, has raised concerns over the necessity of establishing a Ministry of Livestock Development in Nigeria, amidst ongoing efforts to curb the perennial clashes between farmers and herders.
His remarks come in light of Bola Tinubu’s recent approval of the ministry’s creation, aimed at addressing the longstanding conflict over land, pasture, and water resources.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Akande expressed reservations about the need for another governmental body focused on livestock management.
He pointed to existing policies such as the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP), initiated during the administration of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, as potential solutions if effectively implemented.

“I am not sure that we need a ministry of livestock,” Akande stated, emphasizing that the key hindrances lie in the lack of will and expertise to execute the NLTP comprehensively. He suggested awaiting further details before making a definitive judgment on the ministry’s necessity.
The decades-long conflict between herders and farmers has claimed numerous lives and caused significant property damage across Nigeria. Various measures, including the NLTP and bans on open grazing, have been introduced by previous governments and state authorities to mitigate the crisis.
Akande underscored his belief that successful implementation of the NLTP could not only resolve the farmer-herder clashes but also modernize Nigeria’s livestock industry. He emphasized the transformative potential of the plan in addressing the core issues fueling the conflict.
