France Appoints Youngest, First Openly Gay Prime Minister

France has appointed Gabriel Attal as its youngest ever Prime Minister, at just 34 years of age. He is also the country’s first openly gay Prime Minister.

Attal was bestowed with this honor by President Emmanuel Macron.

This appointment comes at a time when President Macron is seeking to infuse new energy into his administration, amidst mounting political pressure from the far right.

The political landscape was recently shaken by the resignation of Attal’s predecessor, Elisabeth Borne, following a contentious debate over an immigration law.

Attal, a former government spokesman and education minister, is renowned for his exceptional communication skills and quick-witted responses.

His tenure as the government spokesperson from 2020 to 2022 brought him into the limelight and introduced him to the French public.

His subsequent roles as the budget minister and then as the education minister, one of the most prestigious positions in the French government, further cemented his reputation.

Attal, as the youngest ever Prime Minister in modern French history, surpasses Socialist Laurent Fabius, who was 37 when appointed by François Mitterrand in 1984.
