Fuel Price Hike: Nigerian Students Threaten Strike Action on September 15

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a nationwide strike scheduled for September 15, 2024, in response to the recent increase in petrol pump prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

NANS made the declaration in a statement by its national senate president, Henry Okunomo, on Tuesday, in reaction to the announcement of the hike from ₦617 per litre to ₦897 per litre effective September 3.

Mr Okunomo expressed his dissatisfaction in the statement titled “Fuel Price Hike: A Threat to Our Future.” He explained that the mass action was imperative against the “egregious act.”

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on students, civil society organizations, and the general public to join a peaceful protest demanding an immediate reversal of the recent fuel price increase and a more empathetic approach to governance.

NANS emphasized that they will not be silenced or intimidated and are committed to uniting in their call for improved conditions for Nigerian students and the broader population.

The association criticized the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) under Mele Kyari’s leadership, asserting that it has failed to provide a stable and affordable fuel supply. They described the latest fuel price increase as the tipping point that exposes the organization’s gross incompetence and failure to fulfill its responsibilities.

NANS accused the NNPC of becoming a symbol of inefficiency, perpetuating hardship and despair among Nigerians. Consequently, they are demanding Kyari’s removal from his position as director-general of the NNPCL, arguing that his continued tenure is a disregard for the Nigerian people’s concerns and a clear sign of the government’s insensitivity to their struggles.
