Gabe Amo Elected Rhode Island’s First Black Congressman

In a landmark victory, Democrat Gabe Amo secured Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District seat, marking the state’s first Black candidate elected to Congress.

The son of Ghanaian and Liberian immigrants and a former White House aide, Amo, 35, emphasized his gratitude to serve the district and state.

He stated, “I’m humbled by the real momentous opportunity to serve as the first person of color,” while highlighting his focus on advocating for a functional federal government, combating gun violence, and safeguarding Social Security and Medicare.

He acknowledged his place in a lineage of advocates and expressed his commitment to restoring confidence in a political landscape he views as turbulent.

This historic win follows former Democratic Rep. David Cicilline’s departure to lead the Rhode Island Foundation as its president and CEO.
