Gambling ‘Pandemic’: Brazil Shuts Down Over 2000 Betting Sites

The Brazilian government has started shutting down several betting sites across the country.

So far, over 2,000 betting platforms, including those sponsoring well-known football teams like Corinthians and other top-tier clubs, have been closed.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s administration has warned sites that don’t comply with new regulations, set to take effect in January.

These regulations aim to combat fraud and money laundering while protecting users, such as by prohibiting minors from betting.

The country is taking these steps as part of a broader effort to regulate online gambling. Brazil’s Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad, referred to the situation as a betting “pandemic,” prompting the government to crack down on the sector.

Although sports betting was legalized in Brazil in 2018, the lack of regulation led to a free-for-all environment, with little to no taxes being paid.

In addition to sports betting, other forms of gambling have gained popularity, such as betting on games like Aviator, where players wager on the flight of a virtual airplane, or the online casino game Fortune Tiger.

Among the blacklisted sites is Esportes da Sorte, a sponsor of Corinthians, one of Brazil’s most popular football clubs, as well as Athletico Paranaense, Bahia, and Gremio de Porto Alegre.

The Ministry has stated that these betting sites will be blocked and prohibited from advertising or sponsoring football teams.
