United States President-elect Donald Trump has vowed that “there will be hell to pay” if hostages held in Gaza during Israel’s ongoing war are not freed by the time he assumes office on January 20.
Trump’s statement on Monday marked his strongest comments on the stalled efforts to resolve the war since the November 5 US elections.
It also comes as reports suggest he is pushing for a ceasefire to be achieved before the start of his second term.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized the handling of the hostage crisis, calling it “all talk, and no action.” This appeared to be a jab at US President Joe Biden and his administration’s failure to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas during over a year of conflict.
“Please let this TRUTH serve to represent that if the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, the date that I proudly assume Office as President of the United States, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against Humanity,” he said.
“Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied History of the United States of America. RELEASE THE HOSTAGES NOW!” he wrote.
However, the post did not provide details about the nature of the threat or whether it might involve the use of US military forces. It also did not clarify which parties were being addressed but specifically mentioned captives held by Hamas, omitting any reference to Palestinian civilians affected by Israeli actions in Gaza.
