Gilbert Chagoury, one of the notable facilitators of the Abacha loot has emerged as a prominent member of Bola Tinubu’s 1411-man delegation to the COP-28 Summit in the UAE.
Designated as “Confidante to the President” on the list of delegates, Chagoury’s inclusion has raised eyebrows given his controversial past in politics and business in Nigeria.
In the 1990s, Chagoury set up accounts with SG Ruegg Bank in Geneva for the late General Sani Abacha to help move over $120 million from the Nigerian Central Bank and later secured immunity from prosecution.

He was implicated for the transfers, an episode that resulted in hefty fines and the subsequent refunding of $66 million to Nigeria in the early 2000s. Despite this history, Chagoury has maintained influence across various sectors, including oil and construction, since the Abacha era.
