Former Sevilla and current Monza forward Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez is set to face a two-year suspension from any football-related activities, an unexpected move that has shocked the football world.
This extreme action is in response to Gómez’s November 2022 doping control positive test result for an illicit drug.
Renowned in the sport, Gómez was a member of the Argentina national squad that won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
But when Argentina’s national team coach, Lionel Scaloni, stopped picking him, his career path took an unexpected turn.

After Sevilla FC terminated his contract, Gómez started a new chapter in his career with Monza. In spite of these obstacles, he maintained his optimism regarding his football career. “I’m loving my stay in Sevilla, but I’m waiting for the right opportunity,” he previously said. “If it doesn’t materialise, I could think about retiring. Football is my life, and I don’t want to be bitter about it,” he added.
But this latest issue might bring his stellar career to an abrupt end. Given the two-year penalty, Gómez won’t be able to play football again until late 2025.
