I am Under Pressure to Join APC, But I Won’t Leave PDP — Gov Mutfwang Says Only God and Voters Can Decide His Defection

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has revealed that he is facing mounting pressure from political stakeholders to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Saturday at an event held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Jos, Mutfwang made it clear that he has no intention of abandoning the PDP, stressing that only God and the people who elected him have the authority to determine his political future.

“It is true that there is pressure on me, but I told them only two people can authorise me to change my party, the God of heaven and the people,” he said. Turning to the crowd, he asked, “Have you asked me to go anywhere?” to which the audience responded with a resounding “No.”

The governor’s remarks come amid reports of high-level moves to lure opposition governors into the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Earlier this month, APC stakeholders in Plateau State dismissed claims that Mutfwang was considering joining their party.

During a meeting in Jos, members rejected a motion proposing his admission into the APC, insisting the party was strong enough to face the next election without outside support.

Reacting to their stance, Mutfwang said those opposing his alleged defection were driven by fear, noting that many within the APC would actually welcome him if he ever chose to join.

“So those rejecting me for what I did not seek are wasting their time. The truth is that 60 to 70 per cent of people in the APC in Plateau would be glad to have us. They know I won’t join them, and that’s why they’re angry,” he said.

His comments bring some relief to the opposition PDP, which has recently lost several governors to the ruling APC. Since 2023, the governors of Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Enugu States –  Umo Eno, Sheriff Oborevwori, and Peter Mbah have all crossed over.

The governors of Taraba, Zamfara, and Osun States have also been linked to similar moves, although some of them have publicly denied such reports.
