Governance In Nigeria Now Crime Scene –Peter Obi

Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the administration of Bola Tinubu, accusing it of neglecting hardworking citizens while enabling corruption among public officials.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Godfrey Okoye University School of Nursing in Enugu State, Obi expressed deep concern over the current state of governance in Nigeria. He lamented that those who genuinely contribute to the nation’s growth are overlooked, while government officials who contribute little continue to embezzle public funds.

Obi referenced recent reports by the World Bank and UNICEF, which detail alarming levels of poverty and malnutrition across the country, describing the situation as a failure of leadership and accountability.

“We’ve turned governance into a crime scene. Instead of using the resources to do the right thing, we’re using it to do the wrong thing,” he said.

Obi emphasised the need for a change in governance, stressing that the country’s resources should be used to benefit the people, not just a select few.

“We must dismantle this criminality as it is today if we want the country to work because other countries are doing it in the world and watching, there’s no reason why this country will not work,” he added.

Obi also drew attention to the severe shortage of nurses in Nigeria, noting that while the country requires approximately 1.2 million nurses to meet healthcare demands, fewer than 200,000 are currently registered.

“Nigeria already needs you. Forget that today you might see a situation where it might seem as if government didn’t get you a job,” he said.

Obi commended the work of volunteer agencies, particularly the church, in supporting projects like the teaching hospital.

“What you people are doing is what we are supposed to be doing in government. That’s what the job of government is,” he said.
