Economist Marcel Okeke, former Chief Economist for Zenith Bank Plc, has strongly criticized the Central Bank of Nigeria’s implementation of a cybersecurity levy, saying that the decision to introduce this levy reflects a lack of sensitivity on the part of the government towards the concerns of Nigerians.
Okeke, in an interview with Channels TV, voiced strong opposition to the recent implementation of a cybersecurity levy, describing the levy as “one more tax too many,” particularly emphasizing its untimely introduction amidst widespread economic challenges in the country.

He echoed sentiments expressed by the Nigeria Labour Congress, which had rejected the levy, questioning the rationale behind its imposition during a period marked by high inflation rates and currency depreciation.
He said, “This is one more tax too many, especially the timing.
“Why is it coming now when there is serious outcry in the polity about people suffering? We have a high rate of inflation, we have the Naira battered in the foreign exchange market, and we have people going through all sorts of challenges and all that. And here we are hearing that another kind of tax is being introduced.”
