Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general election, has opened up about his strained relationship with Nigeria’s elites, stating that they do not like him.
In a recent appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, Obi shared that he has often been told by presidents and leaders in Abuja that “nobody’s happy with you.”
He stated, however, that his manifesto didn’t promise happiness to anyone, adding, “I was clear: I didn’t promise anybody happiness. It wasn’t in my manifesto.”
Obi emphasized that the responsibility for creating happiness lies in the hands of entertainers, such as comedian Chinedu Ani Emmanuel (also known as Nedu) and musical icons like Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy.

According to Him, the role of the government is entirely different: it is to invest in critical sectors like education, healthcare, and economic development that can help lift Nigerians out of poverty.
“Government is not entertainment; it’s not a Nollywood movie, and it’s not music,” he stated.
“Entertainers are there to bring joy and uplift spirits. The government, on the other hand, has a precise job: to invest in education, in health, and in critical areas that will put people out of poverty. That’s the job of the government. We cannot mix the two,” Obi concluded.
